Fashion Formulas

Vahni from Grit and Glamour has a post several weeks ago in which she outlined her personal uniform or outfit formula as she dubbed it.

1. What’s your go-to outfit formula?

Skinny Jeans + Tank/Tee + Blazer + Flats/Boots (depending on the season) + Watch and other jewelry.

(You probably recognize this photo from a previous post.)

2. How did you come about this formula?

Honestly, probably laziness. I’m definitely a “dressed-up-jeans” girl so I usually start there. I love blazers and they instantly make you look polished and put together so it’s a no-brainer. Flats and boots are easy. I refuse to leave home without a watch. And I love jewelry. Somehow it all works together 🙂

3. Do you have different formulas for different occasions in your life?

Dressing for work the past three weeks has been a bit of a challenge. I can’t wear jeans so I’ve definitely had to branch out and expand my style. I’ve found that I gravitate my outfits around skinny, cropped dress pants. They’re my new equivalent to jeans. I only have a black pair of those pants so my black blazer has definitely gotten a workout lately.

I tend to have different formulas for different events (i.e. going out, dinner, work, etc.) so I feel like I have a lot of different styles.

4. Has it morphed over the years?

I go through LOTS AND LOTS of phases. Sometimes I obsess over bags, sometimes shoes, sometimes sunglasses, sometimes scarves, sometimes headbands, and sometimes articles of clothing themselves (dresses, skirts, jeans, etc.). Heck, sometimes books or kitchen appliances. I go through these phases where that is all I really care to shop for. After I get bored, I usually start to covet something else. But no matter the phase, I’m always obsessed with jewelry and watches. I’m constantly on the look out for unique pieces at excellent price points.

I got carried away — back to the topic at hand. 🙂 My style has definitely evolved over the years and I think it is still evolving. I feel that my style has become more sophisticated over the past two years. I like to experiment with trends, but I don’t completely submerge myself. I tend to incorporate trendy items into my current wardrobe. Just because something is popular one season doesn’t mean it will find it’s way into my closet. I only like to wear things that I like, and quite frankly, sometimes I hate the season’s trends.

I will put certain outfits together that do not match my style AT ALL, usually because I’ve seen something that has inspired me to dress that way. I’ve had outfits that are super edgy and rocker-like. Then I’ll wear something that is really bohemian. Then I’ll be wearing a black dress and pearls. I tend to think of it as experimenting because I think my personal style is evolving constantly, especially at this time of transition in my life.

5. Which other blogger’s outfit formula would you like to swipe?

Cupcakes & Cashmere is definitely one of my favorites. Looking through other blogger’s photos is one of the best ways for me to get inspiried. I feel like I can learn so much from the personal style of others. I follow some blogs that aren’t remotely close to my usual style, but I think it’s good for me to get fresh ideas and keep an open mind.

We have similar uniforms… very much a jeans girl. I also go through phases of accessories. Been hooked on rings lately!

I love your cute look here. I definitely adore blazers and wear them often. Denim is always a great beginning to a comfortable look whether casual or dressy. 🙂
