Sleeping Secrets

bows and sequins apartment nyc bedroom

In order to freshen things up for spring, I’ve spruced up my apartment a bit to make it feel brighter and more colorful. (It looks a little different than the last time you saw it, huh?)

nyc bedroom decor ideas

I’ve filled my fireplace with books that have bright binding, I’ve been buying colorful blooms on the reg, I’ve switched out my scents to smell more floral and springy, and I even got some new bedding!

I had a bit of a situation with my coffee table, but once it fi-nal-ly gets to New York, I’ll post a full apartment tour! It has taken so long to get everything just right.

loccitaine hand cream

This week is National Sleep Week… did you know? I’ve been making an effort to get more shut eye these past few weeks, but it’s not always easy. Sleep is a major issue for me. It takes me hours to shut off my mind and fall asleep. And once I wake up, I can usually never fall back asleep. It’s a constant battle that definitely contributes to my under-eye circles that rival black eyes.

I’ve tried a whole slew of small things to help me fall asleep faster and sleep better throughout the night — I bought a “nighttime tea” that I try to drink before bed… I’m not sure if the valerian works for me or not, but the hot tea is relaxing none the less. I slather on lavender-scented hand cream before I hit the sheets, which does actually help to calm me down.

I’ve also found that white sheets help me sleep better. Kind of weird, right? I don’t know if it’s a mental thing (probably) or if the white sheets actually make it more serene, but I’ll take it. And having an insanely comfortable mattress definitely helps! Oh, and pillows, too. I can’t tell you how many different types of pillows I’ve bought and tested, but I’ve finally found ones that I like. It’s bizarre how my sleeping patterns and preferences have changed over the years. I used to be able to sleep like a rock anywhere, no matter the occasion! Now, I’m still able to fall asleep in cabs and fall asleep standing up in a bar, but I can rarely ever fall asleep in my own bed. Extremely practical, right?

I recently added this Crane & Canopy duvet cover to my bedding set-up and I love it! It’s a fun (and more colorful!) take on the all-white bedding look and the material is so soft and sleek. I’ve styled it with both the white side on top (like it shows on the website) and with the pattern on top like I have it here. Kind of fun that it’s reversible!

I love this! I really like the print of the duvet! One product you might want to try out is the This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray. You just spray it on your pillow, it smells like lavender, and it’s supposed to help you sleep. I’m not sure it works that well for me personally, but it smells lovely and is very relaxing.

I too had problems falling asleep due to my brain turning on whenever I laid down. We now listen to audiobooks at night. No light to keep us up like a TV would have. Keeps me just interested enough to turn off my brain, but not too interested that I can’t fall asleep. My favorite by FAR is Harry Potter by Jim Dale, he does the MOST amazing voices for every character!

I think we must have been related in a previous time! LOL! Don’t you love the city!? I do as much as the OTTOMAN! I am quite sure how useful you have found it to be!
I am also happy there is someone else on this earth that has a problem sleeping on colour (especially dark for me). I LoVe crisp, white cotton sheets. Easy to launder, bleach if need and here is where I get a little (ok some say A LOT) OCD and can spray starch and iron right on the bed! Oh what joy! A suggestion that doesn’t cost much and can’t hurt for your sleep issue….I use a “pillow mist” (oh so heavenly) from Earth Therapeutics/mind body therapy called ZZz-Scentual-Blend. I use Bruce d’oreiller valériane et lavande. It was only $8.00 at Kohls in New York! It last quite a bit and I use it when my grandson’s come to visit as well! Made in the USA (right in Plainview, NY!) http://www.earththerapeutitic.com. I have nothing to do with company. Just satisfied customer.
I also have an antique dress form (she has a name but I am afraid people will really think I am cRazY…LOL) that I change according to the seasons (and Christmas). My thought since you have such an amazing new ottoman was to maybe put a favourite top on her and embellish with more jewelry along with your favourite hat! I have been known for fully outfitting Elysé for a special occasion so I can just put it on and go! I have also taken all of my vintage and antique jewelry brooches, earrings, necklaces and pinned her completely in BLING! Since it is still cold and snowy she is wearing my favourite animal print faux fur scarf with a brooch and a cool vintage belt!
Your new bedding definitely puts some colour where it counts! I LoVe the brick walls you find all over the city and I think it looks fresh! My only suggestion would be to find a great Ikat print (navy, yellow and oranges perhaps) lumbar pillow (my personal favourite is Pottery Barn) and replace or add with your animal print square pillow.
    Happy nesting!

I love how you styled your bedroom! I especially love all of the bright books on the windowsill and the Target headboard. Target furniture is so great! I’ve found that steering clear of electronics an hour before bed helps!
